Transformers: Rise of the Beasts brings the creative forces of MPC and Mill+ together

June 29, 2023

This summer, Optimus Prime and the Autobots made their triumphant return to the big screen in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. After 14 years since the original series, these iconic characters faced their biggest challenge yet. Discover how our studios MPC and Mill+ joined creative forces to deliver a mind-blowing cinematic experience.

MPC

A collaboration of over 1000 talented artists and production crew took place across MPC’s global studios in London, Montreal, Bangalore, LA, Toronto, and Adelaide. Delivering an impressive 896 shots for the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts film, featuring 18 of the movie’s iconic characters, including Arcee, Bumblebee, Mirage, Optimus Primal, Optimus Prime, Rhinox, Scourge, and the awe-inspiring planet-eating character, Unicron.

MPC’s Environments team had multiple large scale full CG and digital set extensions to build, from jungle environments, to mountainous, to built-up cities. One of largest, was to change the present-day New York skyline back to 1994.

The Mill

Mill+ had the major task of transforming six colossal 3D billboards across the globe to support the release of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. These larger-than-life installations breathed life into the iconic characters of Optimus Prime and Optimus, captivating audiences worldwide. The global locations that played host to these awe-inspiring billboards include Seoul, boasting a staggering 80-meter wide screen, alongside Taiwan, Hong Kong, Toronto, and Tokyo. An additional versatile cut was created and strategically placed across 40 other locations.

Collaborating directly with Paramount, Mill+ was granted the freedom to unleash their creative prowess. Drawing inspiration from the film’s breathtaking shots, they crafted narratives that seamlessly intertwined with the main protagonists and locations. Some screens boasted resolutions over 8K, which meant producing all six billboards in parallel in only six weeks. Each screen possessed a unique sweet spot, where the mesmerizing 3D effect truly came to life, leaving no room for simply recycling animations.

A huge congratulation goes out to our extraordinary team of talented artists across MPC and The Mill for their contribution to this monumental project.
