Inside Scoop | 10 for 10 with Chanda Kumari, Key Artist, Paint/Prep

April 18, 2023

With this series, we will uncover the different and colorful roles that exist within Technicolor Creative Studios as well as showcasing our talented employees and bringing their story to the forefront. Here are ten questions we asked Chanda Kumari, our incredible Paint and Prep Artist, who has been with Technicolor for more than a decade.

What was the first project you worked on/can remember being released when you joined?

My initial assignment with the company was to work on the “Clash of the Titans” project. The experience of working on this project was enjoyable as well as enlightening, as I gained new skills and knowledge throughout its completion. I particularly relished watching the film in a cinema thanks to the complimentary movie tickets that were provided by MPC.

Having gained experience at a smaller studio, I was delighted to join Technicolor in 2009. The opportunity to work for such a reputable company and expand my skill set was an exciting one. After producing consistently high-quality work and constantly developing my skills, I was promoted to Prep-Paint artist and later to Senior Prep-Paint artist, which presented new challenges. My supervisors, lead, and colleagues have always provided me with a great deal of support and encouragement during my tenure, which has allowed me to mentor other artists and help them reach their full potential.  While working in an industry that is largely dominated by men, I have noticed some challenges that women may face. There is a common misconception that women are not capable of dedicating as much time to their careers as their male counterparts, but this is not the case. In the future, I would like to see more women in leadership positions and being promoted.

In one sentence, what does a Key-prep artist do?

As a VFX Prep artist, you are responsible for organizing and preparing elements for compositing, providing technical guidance and mentorship, managing schedules and deadlines, and collaborating with other departments to ensure the success of the project.

Your most “eureka” moment during your career?

My most “eureka” moments during my career were being offered the opportunity to work on the Academy Award-winning films “Life of Pi” and “The Jungle Book,” which were truly incredible experiences.

Your career highlight to date?

As a Roto artist, I provided training to several artists and shared efficient techniques for accomplishing tasks. As a team leader, I successfully managed high-pressure projects and taught my colleagues time-saving methods, resulting in recognition for my contribution. After joining Prep, I continued to take on challenging shots and completed them ahead of schedule, while also assisting my colleagues to accomplish their goals. In recognition of my efforts, I received another award.

If you had taken an alternate path, what would you be doing now?

My great passion for VFX and many years of experience make it difficult for me to imagine doing anything other than this; however, I have always had a fascination with teaching and can see myself pursuing a career in education in the future.

Your DREAM project would involve…

I aspire to establish my own VFX studio with a majority of female employees. I strongly believe in promoting gender diversity and providing flexible working hours for my team to ensure a healthy work-life balance. My goal is to create an environment that fosters creativity and innovation, ultimately leading to award-winning visual effects. It is my dream that one day my female employees will walk up on stage and receive an Oscar award for the outstanding contribution they have made to the company.

When you’re not working on a project you can be found…

When I am not working, I often learn  skills and techniques relevant to my field to enhance my capabilities and facilitate my work.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Ascending the ladder of success in the VFX industry requires considerable dedication and hard work, but with the right attitude and approach, it is possible. Continuous learning is a key component of this industry, as is maintaining a positive attitude. VFX is a rapidly expanding industry in India, offering tremendous opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.

Your biggest achievement so far?

In essence, it is about becoming stronger every day, being honest and straightforward, and never giving up.
